About Nemi And Japanese Paws

This blog, Japanese Paws is mainly about Nemi and her breed, Japanese Spitz. It is also about dogs in general.

Nemi - Our Japanese Spitz
Nemi – Our Beautiful Japanese Spitz

Nemi moved in with us 31. March 2014. An incredibly cute little Japanese Spitz girl. When she walked in through the door in the middle of the night after a long car ride from Telemark in Norway, my family and I felt a new kind of atmosphere transforming our home, an atmosphere of pure love and bliss for this little four-legged furball.

Thinking back three to four months, I was quite firm that we would not get a dog in our family. But suddenly, here we were, my family and I, with a new family member.

She moved in with us with only two toys from her previous home and a blanket with the smell of her mum. In addition, she brought with her a folder with lots of information and personal data.

The little furball on four tiny legs triggered a flood of overwhelming warm, fuzzy feelings of love.

A Short Story About Becoming Dog Parents

We thought we had prepared well enough for Nemi to come home. But in hindsight, we quickly discovered that there was a lot more equipment and supplies that should have been in our house already.

We bought the rest of what was needed in the next few days and weeks. We scoured websites for information about dog equipment and visited many pet stores in the process.

We asked other dog owners we met walking their dogs, and of course, during veterinary visits, there were many questions for the veterinarian to respond to.

All the information we were looking for was available, but it felt like it was spread out all around.

Further, there was a lot of divergent information about a puppy´s needs which was quite frustrating.

The huge amount of information about dogs spread out everywhere, triggered the idea to start a website to aid us in learning about her breed as quickly as possible and hopefully turn it into a hub of information related to the breed and dogs in general.

There is also a sister website to Japanese Paws in my native language, Norwegian, called Japanske Poter, which is aimed at the Norwegian and Nordic markets.

Our dog – Nemi

Nemi is the joy of our life. She is our heart medicine. A small four-legged loving friend of 6.6 kg with lots of beautiful fur, soft as cotton. She is a very determined little lady who has her routines we must abide by.

She is energetic and very playful but also quite shy towards humans and other dogs. She needs time to get comfortable around others, but it is full throttle when the barrier is broken. It helps with a nice-tasting treat or two to break the barrier.

When we wake up in the morning, she comes up to us in our bed and wants to cuddle and say good morning. She lies close to us and wants us to scratch and massage her. Seeing how she puts her head on my wife’s arm and looks at her for several minutes is nothing but amazing.

Afterward, it is time to play hide and seek between pillows and blankets for a few minutes. If you have woken up in a bad mood, Nemi is the perfect recipe to save the day.

The same goes for the end of a long at work. When you get home, you are attacked by this lovely little lump of fur. She literally goes airborne and makes «helicopters» a few centimeters above ground. She jumps and does several 360-degree rotations of joy when you get home.

If you have gloves on, they will disappear quickly, and she will be running in front of you at full speed, with you running after. She stops and looks at you with the look of  «Are you coming or not? Try to take your glove back!».

And just before you reach her, she snatches your glove again and then rushes off again.

If you have a bad day and are sad, Nemi notices this and comes to comfort you. If you are ill, she will understand and come to you and want to comfort you. If there is a bit of “turbulence” at home with quarreling, as there sometimes is, she intervenes to calm us down.

The Idea Behind Japanese Paws

Japanese Paws is my way of sharing my family´s experiences in being dog owners. We have had Nemi for 10 years at the time I write this, and it has been an adventure since the beginning. What strikes us when we reflect on the first day with our dear Nemi is how fast time has passed by.

We felt we were pretty well prepared before we picked her up. The breeder, Kennel Dunlin, gave us a lot of good background information. This made us feel confident in our choice after all, but this was very new and unknown anyway.

The experiences we have had in terms of the need we have and Nemi has in terms of equipment, care, and nursing, we want to share with others.

It has been a pretty big surprise how other dog owners behave when we meet them during Nemi´s daily walks. There is a great lack of knowledge about how one’s own behavior is transmitted to one’s dog.

It has also been surprising how people you meet do not listen to your requests as a dog owner about things you should not do. This concerns everything from giving the dog treats it should not have, disturbing her while playing and, not least, disturbing the dog when it has retreated to rest and take a nap

What You Will Find At Japanese Paws

Frequent articles and posts will be published about the days with Nemi. I will write about how the equipment we provide for her work, health-related topics, food and nutrition, supplements, and activities are other topics you will find here too.

You will also find articles about the equipment we do not have ourselves but looks interesting or has received good reviews.

In some of the articles and posts on the blog, there will be links to websites that sell the equipment mentioned or similar equipment and possibly. relevant services, as well as websites that test and compare equipment for dogs.

This means that if we link to a website, we get a small percentage of the traffic to the page or possibly a sale. The revenue will mainly go to the operation of this website. What is important to us is a genuine desire to share experiences and knowledge that benefit other dogs and their owners.

Feedback Is Welcomed

Japanese Paws depends on feedback for the website to provide quality content. It would be appreciated if you could comment on the articles on this website. I want constructive feedback to help write new articles about topics you as the reader are interested in.

I want to emphasize that I am not a professional in any way, nor a specialist in the field concerning dogs and that it is my personal opinions and thoughts that are presented on this website. My motto is that I learn as long as I live.
